On Saturday, August 8th the British Cars of New Hampshire 13th Annual Show of Dreams opened with the picturesque Town of Wolfeboro, NH and a beautiful blue sky as our backdrop.

The day began at 7am with the smell of coffee in the air from the pavilion, trailers parking as close as we could get to the field and volunteers eager to prepare for the expected participants and spectators. At this point we had 3 hours to get all the canopies, tables, banners, flags, activity areas, regalia items, DJ, High Hopes Balloon and vendors in place before we could officially open the show.

Well, we did it!!!

The first cars began to arrive around 9am stopping at the registration table to pick-up their pre-registration packets and goodie bags. The children’s area was alive with the sound of the bell from Peter and Betty Bland’s Pillory game. The Mount Washington Valley Children’s Museum Tent was set up with the mesmerizing Gravity Well along with bead, sticker and coloring crafts to occupy the little ones when they got tired of climbing, swinging and bouncing in the playground.

By the 10am opening of the Show, Saturday was off to a jolly good start!

Cars arrived at a steady pace until almost noon to a total of 106 cars on the field. We were all amazed at the variety and caliber of vehicles driving onto the field. Spectators arrived very interested in the cars and the High Hopes Foundation. New members were joining BCNH and the vendors were in the middle of the mix with their fine products. High Hopes Volunteers meandered through the field selling raffle tickets sometimes dodging the Segway and the Penny Farthing Bicycles. Everyone on the field had the pleasure of watching the Strawbery Banke Croquet Club demonstrate the proper way to play the game of croquet in a continuous loop of matches from 10am to 3pm. As always, DJ Jim George, was entertaining and informative throughout the day.

By mid-morning, the concession stand had opened for business and “The Nick” volunteers opened the grill for a “burger and dog” cookout for spectators and participants alike.

The day seemed to fly by. Before we knew it, it was 2pm and time for the BCNH Monster Raffle. The raffle has been a show highlight for many years and this year did not disappoint. It was, also, time to collect the British Car Ballots which would be counted that evening to determine the winners.

The show closed at 3pm on Saturday with a very tired group of volunteers partially dismantling the canopies to prevent the constant wind from blowing them into the neighbor’s yards over night. All was packed away and the volunteers were ready to descend upon Wolfeboro for cocktails, dinner and sleep!

Sunday morning began at 7am with the arrival of Nexdine Catering Service to set-up for the ”Breakfast on the Field” event.

Breakfast opened right on time at 8am with made to order eggs, bacon, sausage, fresh baked muffins, fresh fruit, coffee and tea. Everyone began to arrive to a field glowing with sunlight and dew. They sat down to a great breakfast and good conversation making it a great beginning to the second day of the show. The Breakfast closed at 10am and the show opened.

This year was the first year a two day show had been planned. Sunday included a new event entitled “Celebration of the European Motorcar”. Not knowing what to expect in the way of European cars, we waited anxiously for the first vehicles to arrive. We were not disappointed. Many LBCs came back for the second day of festivities and 10 European cars joined us with their beautiful examples of European engineering. Each spectator was asked to vote for their favorite car on the field for a “People’s Choice” award later in the day.

Sunday brought many friends, old and new to the field. The playground was busy with the laughter of children playing. “Mike Sullivan Storyteller” arrived to entertain the children with his books, juggling , origami art and life size chess set. The concession stand was booming with hungry people. The weather was again great which added to the excitement of the day.

Early in the afternoon, a very special guest arrived. A young man named, Cole who is a High Hopes wish recipient, visited with us for the afternoon. His wish was for a Segway so he would be able to participate in outdoor activities with his friends and family. We were all honored to have him with us.

The afternoon rolled along with the second half of the Monster Raffle, the British car trophy presentation and the European car presentation. By this time, the predicted clouds began to roll in. It looked like the sky was going to open and close the show very soon.

Well, by 2pm we had finished the business of the day and Wade dos Santos, club director (alias the Beefeater) closed the show with thanks to all in attendance.

The field was a bustle with activity with the process of dismantling as the car owners left the field with waves of good bye and “we’ll see ya next year”.

It was a Great show!!!!!
